Have you ever wished that you could vote directly on an issue and bypass your public official? Are you sure that your representative is really representing you? There is a tool that allows the people to vote directly on issues when they go to the polls in November, and it is called a referendum. Right now, we have a chance to vote directly on an issue that would impact each and every one of us.
SB1039 is a bill that – if passed – would put the issue of cannabis legalization on the ballot in November. This is now a possibility because the Maryland Senate and House of Delegates will vote on the measure. But if we had the ability to initiate referenda, we the people could decide the issues we want to see on the ballot. We wouldn’t have to wait for legislators to introduce the bills. More than half the states have this ability, which only requires a petition from the people. Referendum politics is the people’s politics.
